The Basics
Both Cat6 and Cat6A (Augmented Category 6) are twisted-pair copper cables used for Ethernet networking. They look similar but have key differences in performance, bandwidth, and application.
Cat6 Patch Cords
- Bandwidth: 250 MHz
- Max Speed: 1 Gbps (up to 100m), 10 Gbps (up to 55m)
- Construction: 23-24 AWG copper, tighter twist ratio than Cat5e
- Best For: General office networks, VoIP, standard desktop connections
- Price: More affordable, starting at ₹149 for 1m
Cat6A Patch Cords
- Bandwidth: 500 MHz (double Cat6)
- Max Speed: 10 Gbps up to 100m
- Construction: 23 AWG, thicker cable with better shielding (F/UTP or S/FTP)
- Best For: Data centers, 10GBase-T networks, PoE++ applications, future-proofing
- Price: Premium pricing for premium performance
When to Upgrade to Cat6A
- 10GBase-T deployment — Cat6 only supports 10G to 55m; Cat6A goes to 100m
- PoE++ (802.3bt) — Up to 90W power delivery requires thicker conductors
- High-density environments — Better alien crosstalk (AXT) performance
- Future-proofing — Cat6A will handle emerging standards longer
Connector Quality Matters
Look for:
- 50-micron gold-plated contacts
- Molded strain relief boots
- Fluke-tested compliance certification
- Pure copper conductors (not CCA)
